In this significant municipal building, important guests were received in a manner befitting their status. Furthermore in ‘De Vierschaar’ (the earliest courtroom) Lady Justice watched over the administration of justice through bailiffs and sheriffs. It was here that conflicts between neighbours were settled and witches were sentenced to death.
The atmosphere of the time is still palpable. Paintings and historical artefacts, such as the famous gilded silver cup (1551) of Maximilian of Burgundy, are tangible evidence of the time when Veere flourished.
Since 1581, a special bond has existed between the House of Orange-Nassau and the town of Veere. Queen Beatrix is, at present, marquise of Veere. The town hall collection also includes, amongst other things, portraits of members of the Royal family.
As well as being a museum, with once a year unusual exhibitions, the old town hall offers a very romantic setting in which many marriages take place.
